International Expert Roundtable on COVID-19 and Autistic Adults
Self-advocate voices are a central feature in the most recent issue of Autism in Adulthood, a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that is a leading voice for research and scholarship on topics affecting adults on the autism spectrum. Focusing on emerging adulthood through the latter years of life, this dynamic hub of leading researchers, autistic community leaders, and practitioners is published several times per year by Mary Ann Leibert Inc., a leading publisher of cutting-edge scientific, technical, and medical content that publishes over 90 peer-reviewed journals annually worldwide in addition to books, trade publications, specialized newsletters, and society and conference proceedings.
In a thought-provoking article released online and in print, Advocacy Without Border founder, Morénike Giwa Onaiwu, collaborates with a select cross-disciplinary multinational group of stakeholders, scholars, thought leaders, and clinicians to identify difficulties and opportunities that the coronavirus pandemic poses to autistic adults. In the article, entitled An Expert Discussion on Autism in the COVID-19 Pandemic, Morénike addresses issues related to reduced access to resources, disrupted routines, racism, ableism, mental health, financial insecurity, increased risk of violence (police/institutional as well as intimate partner abuse). Additionally, the grassroots Autistic People of Color Community Fund, a project that provides financial support for people of color in the form of micro-grants, is included in a comprehensive global list of recommended reputable resources and initiatives to help support autistic adults in the current pandemic.
